Give an hour to a local club
Every sports club runs on people who keep score, make tea, mark lines and drive the kids. One hour is welcome.
Local sport depends on volunteers: people who keep score at the cricket, run the refreshments at the football, help at the swimming gala, or set out cones for the youngest players. You do not have to play, or even know the rules well, to be part of it.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Think of a sport you enjoy watching, or one a child or grandchild plays. Find the nearest local club.
Get in touch and say you could give an hour: ask what they need. Scoring, refreshments, setting up, lifts, and keeping records are common gaps.
Go for one session. Ask someone to show you the job, and let them know if there is anything you cannot do.
Afterwards, decide whether to come back. Many clubs are glad of someone who comes once a month.
The reason
Why it helps
Volunteering at a club puts you outdoors, on your feet and among people with a shared interest, often week after week. It can be a way back into a sport you used to play, or a way to stay part of one you can no longer play. Helping others is also something many people find good for their own wellbeing.
A gentle variation
If being on your feet is hard, ask for a seated job: scoring, the gate, or keeping the club's records and newsletter. Some of that can even be done from home.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
Volunteer with a friend, or alongside the child who plays. If you are a caregiver, a regular hour at a club can be your own time with people who know you by name.
Try it today
This week, contact one local sports club and ask what they need help with for an hour.
