Try one taster session
Swimming, bowls, tennis, tai chi or a beginners' run: one try, with no promise of more.
Many people would like to take up a sport or outdoor activity but feel they are too old, too unfit or too out of practice. A single taster session, with no commitment, takes the pressure off. You are just trying it.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Think of a sport or activity you have always been curious about, or used to enjoy.
Look for a beginners' or taster session near you: local sports centres, clubs, parks and community groups often run them, many for free or very little.
Book one session. Tell yourself it is just a try, and that you can stop at any time.
Afterwards, notice how you feel, in your body and your mood. If you enjoyed it, book one more.
The reason
Why it helps
Trying something new can be both exciting and daunting. Thinking of it as a single taster lowers the stakes and makes it easier to begin. Many activities have beginners' sessions designed for people of all ages and abilities, and finding one you enjoy makes it much easier to keep moving.
A gentle variation
If you live with a health condition or disability, look for adapted or inclusive sessions; many sports have them. Chair-based exercise, walking versions of sports and gentle water sessions are all good places to start.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
Bring a friend, partner or older child. It is easier to walk into a new place with someone, and it gives you something to share and talk about afterwards.
Try it today
This week, find one beginners' or taster session for a sport you are curious about, and book it.
