Watching the game together

A match on television or at a local club, shared with someone, as a reason to be together.

You do not have to play a sport to enjoy it. Watching a game together, at home or at a local club, is one of the oldest ways people come together. For someone who cannot play any more, it can be a link to who they used to be.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Find out what sport the person you want to spend time with loves, or used to love.

  2. Choose a game: on television, on the radio, or at a local club or school, where tickets are often cheap or free.

  3. Make an occasion of it: their favourite snack, the right colours, the old stories about matches they remember.

  4. Afterwards, talk about it, the moments you enjoyed, the decisions you disagreed with, and pick the next one.

The reason

Why it helps

Shared interests give people something easy to talk about and look forward to. Watching sport together brings excitement, laughter and a sense of belonging without needing a lot of energy. For older people or those who are unwell, it can bring back strong memories and a sense of connection.

A gentle variation

If going to a live game is too much, listen to a game on the radio together, or watch old recorded matches. Local amateur games are often quieter, closer and easier to get to than big stadiums.

Try itwith someone.

Invite others who share the interest: a neighbour, an old teammate, a grandchild. A regular match-day can become a small community of its own.

Try it today

This week, find one game to watch with someone you would like to spend time with, and invite them.
