A calmevening routine
Five slow minutes at the basin before bed, done the same way each night, tell your skin and your mind that the day is over.
The evening is when the day comes off: the outside air, the hours of worry, the hand that rested on your cheek through a long phone call. This routine is short and plain, and its real job is to be the same every night, so that it becomes a signal that the day is done.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Dim the bathroom light if you can, or switch on a lamp instead of the overhead light.
Wash your face with lukewarm water, slowly, using your fingertips in small circles. Rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel.
If your skin feels tight, press a little plain, unscented moisturiser into your face and neck, and use what is left on your hands.
Before you leave the basin, breathe out slowly three times and say to yourself: that is the day.
The reason
Why it helps
Doing the same small things in the same order each night is one of the simplest ways to help the body wind down towards sleep. Lukewarm water and gentle fingers wash off the day without stripping the skin. The slow breaths and the low light are as much for your mind as your face. After a few weeks, the routine itself starts to feel like the beginning of rest.
A gentle variation
On the nights you are too tired for any of it, splash your face with water and pat it dry. That still counts. If you wear make-up, take it off gently with warm water and a soft cloth first, and let that be enough.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
If you live with someone, agree a time when the bathroom light goes down and the phones go away. If you help someone get ready for bed, give them the same slow, warm wash in the same order each night, so they know what comes next.
Try it today
Tonight, dim the light, wash your face slowly with lukewarm water, pat it dry, and breathe out three times before you leave the basin.
