A phone-free first half hour
Keeping the phone out of reach for the first part of the morning, so the day starts with you and not your messages.
For many of us, the first thing we see in the morning is a screen full of other people's needs. Messages, news and notifications arrive before we have even sat up. A short phone-free start gives the day a gentler beginning.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Tonight, charge your phone outside the bedroom, or at least out of reach of the bed. Use a simple alarm clock if you need one.
In the morning, do three things before you pick up the phone: open the curtains, have a drink of water, and wash or dress.
Aim for the first half hour without the screen. If you need to check one thing, check that one thing and put it down.
Notice how the morning feels after a week. Keep what helps and let go of what does not.
The reason
Why it helps
Starting the day by reacting to messages can make the whole day feel rushed and scattered. A few minutes without the phone lets you wake up at your own pace and decide what matters before the world decides for you. Charging the phone elsewhere also tends to help sleep.
A gentle variation
If you need to be reachable in the night or early morning for someone you care for, keep the phone nearby with only calls from that person or the care team allowed through, and everything else silenced.
