Twenty minutes with the photographs

Sorting a few photos at a time into albums you will actually look at, and sharing a favourite with someone in it.

Most of us have thousands of photographs on our phones that we never look at again. Sorting them can feel like a mountain. But twenty minutes at a time, choosing the ones that matter, turns a digital pile into memories you can enjoy and share.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Choose one month or one event, not the whole collection.

  2. Scroll through and pick out your favourites, the ones that make you smile or tell a story. Put them in one album with a clear name.

  3. Clear out obvious duplicates, blurry shots and screenshots you no longer need, if you feel like it. There is no need to be ruthless.

  4. Send one favourite photograph to someone who is in it, with a line about the memory.

The reason

Why it helps

Looking back over good moments can lift mood and remind us of people and times that matter. Choosing a few favourites, rather than keeping everything equally, makes them easier to find and enjoy. Sharing a photo is a small, warm way to reconnect with someone.

A gentle variation

If you care for someone with memory loss, choose photographs of familiar people and places and make a small album or printed book to look at together. Older photographs are often recognised more easily than recent ones.
