Not a holiday. A day. A place within an hour, a flask and a sandwich, and a reason to look forward to a Saturday.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Think of somewhere within an hour by car, bus or train: the coast, a hill, a market town, a garden, a museum.

  2. Choose one thing you would do there, and one place to eat or sit.

  3. Look at the calendar and choose a day this month. Write it in.

  4. The night before, pack something to eat and drink, a layer for the weather, and leave early enough that it does not feel rushed.

The reason

Why it helps

A day out is short enough to plan and long enough to feel like a change. It breaks the run of weeks that look the same, and gives you something to look forward to in between. Being somewhere different, even for an afternoon, often makes home feel easier when you come back.

A gentle variation

If a whole day cannot happen, make it a morning. If the day comes and you are too tired, move it rather than cancel it.
