The appointment journey, planned the day before

Ten minutes the day before a hospital or clinic visit can make the journey calmer: the route, the time, the bag and the entrance.

Getting to an appointment can be more stressful than the appointment itself: the unfamiliar route, the parking, the worry about being late, the long walk from the entrance. A little planning the day before takes much of that worry out of the morning.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Check the appointment letter or message for the exact building, entrance and department, and look up the route, including where to park or which bus or train to take.

  2. Work out when to leave, and add extra time for traffic, finding your way inside and a slow walk. Arriving early is easier than arriving late.

  3. Pack a bag the night before: the letter, a list of medicines, your questions, glasses, a phone charger, a drink and a snack, and something to pass the waiting time.

  4. If walking long distances is hard, find out before the day whether the hospital or clinic has wheelchairs to borrow, a place to stop the car by the door, or transport support.

The reason

Why it helps

Much of the stress of a journey comes from uncertainty. Knowing the route, the time and the entrance means fewer decisions in the morning, when nerves are already up. A packed bag by the door means you are not hunting for papers as you leave.

A gentle variation

If the journey itself feels like too much, ask the clinic whether the appointment can be done by phone or video, or whether help with transport is available where you live.

WE · TRIBE

Try itwith someone.

If you are going with someone, plan the journey with them the day before, so they know what to expect. If one of you is driving, agree who deals with the parking and who goes in to say you have arrived.

Try it today

For your next appointment, look up the exact entrance and the route today, and write down the time you will leave.
