The first days after hard news
After a difficult diagnosis, for you or someone you love: one notebook, one question at a time, and permission not to decide everything at once.
Hard news from a doctor can leave you unable to remember a word that was said. The days after are often a blur of fear, phone calls and searching late at night. You do not have to understand everything at once. A few small anchors can help you get through the first days.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Get one notebook for this. Write down what you remember of what you were told, and every question that comes to you, as it comes.
Find out who your main contact is, such as a named nurse, doctor or care team, and write their number on the first page.
Choose one or two trusted sources of information that the care team recommends, and try to avoid late-night searching.
Each day, do one ordinary thing that is just for you: a walk, a shower, a meal with someone, an hour of something familiar.
The reason
Why it helps
Shock makes it hard to take in and remember information, so writing things down helps. Having one named contact means questions go to the people who know your situation, rather than to strangers online. Ordinary moments are not a distraction from the news; they are what helps people carry it.
A gentle variation
If the news is about someone you care for, keep the notebook together, and ask them what they want to know, and how much. Some people want every detail, others want to take it slowly. Both are all right.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
Ask someone to come to the next appointment with you, to listen and take notes. It is easier to hear hard things when someone else is holding the pen.
Try it today
Today, start one notebook, write the main contact's number on the first page, and write down three questions.
