The first months of retirement
Retirement can feel like a long holiday, then a long Tuesday. A loose weekly shape helps the new time feel like yours.
Many people look forward to retirement for years and are surprised by how strange the first months feel. Without the structure of work, days can drift, and the loss of colleagues and purpose can hit harder than expected. A loose weekly shape, chosen by you, can help.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
On a sheet of paper, draw the seven days of the week. Write in the few fixed things you already have: appointments, family, caring.
Add one thing each week that gets you out of the house with other people: a class, a group, a walk, volunteering, a regular coffee.
Add one thing that uses your skills or keeps you learning: a project, a course, something you always meant to try.
Leave plenty of space empty on purpose. Review the shape after a month, and keep what you enjoyed.
The reason
Why it helps
Work gives most people routine, social contact and a sense of being useful, often without them noticing. When it ends, those things need a new home. A gentle structure, rather than a busy one, lets you rest and enjoy the freedom while keeping the parts of life that help people feel well.
A gentle variation
If retirement has come with caring for a partner or parent, the time may not feel like your own at all. Try to protect one small regular thing that is just for you, even an hour a week.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
If you live with a partner, talk about how you each want to spend the days, and how much time together and apart feels right. Retirement changes a household's rhythm for everyone.
Try it today
Today, write down one regular weekly thing that would get you out of the house with other people.
