The first-night box
Moving home, or moving someone you care for: one box, packed last and opened first, with everything you need for the first night.
Moving is one of the most tiring things a household can do. At the end of the day, in a new place full of boxes, nobody can find the kettle or the medicines. A single box, packed last and opened first, turns that first night from chaos into something manageable.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Choose one sturdy box or bag and label it clearly on every side: open first.
Pack the basics for one night and one morning: medicines, phone chargers, toilet paper, soap, a towel, bedding, a change of clothes, a flashlight.
Add kitchen basics: kettle, two mugs, tea or coffee, a few plates and cutlery, a snack, scissors for opening boxes.
Travel with the box yourself rather than in the van, and set it up as soon as you arrive: make one bed, put the kettle on, find the medicines.
The reason
Why it helps
The first evening in a new place often sets the tone for the weeks after. Having what you need for sleep, washing and a hot drink means you can rest, rather than unpacking until midnight. It also means anything important, like medicines, is never lost in a pile of boxes.
A gentle variation
If you are helping an older parent or someone you care for to move, pack a second box of familiar things for their first night: photos, a favourite cushion, their own mug, a radio. Familiar things help a new room feel like theirs.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
Ask someone to bring a simple meal on the first evening, or to come and help make the beds. Moving is easier with company, and a shared meal on boxes can become a good memory.
Try it today
If you are moving soon, find one box today, label it open first, and put the phone chargers and medicines list in it.
