The week after a job ends

Losing work, or leaving it to care for someone, is a shock. A few steady steps for the first week, before the big decisions.

Whether you were laid off, a contract ended, illness stopped you, or you left to care for someone, the end of a job can bring worry, anger, relief and grief all at once. The first week is not the time to fix everything. It is the time to steady yourself and take a few sensible first steps.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Keep a simple shape to your days: get up at the usual time, get dressed, go outside, and plan one small task each morning.

  2. Gather the paperwork in one place: your contract, the letter about the job ending, your last pay slips, and anything about final pay or notice.

  3. Contact an official employment or benefits advice service, or a free independent advice service, to check what support or rights may apply to you.

  4. Tell one or two people what has happened, and let them help, even with small things like a walk or a meal.

The reason

Why it helps

Losing a routine at the same time as a job can make the days feel shapeless, and that can deepen worry. A simple daily shape keeps you steady. Getting advice early matters because support and rights often depend on dates and deadlines, and having the papers together makes those conversations much easier.

A gentle variation

If you left work to care for someone, you may feel the loss of colleagues and identity alongside relief. Both are normal. Ask an advice service about caregiver support where you live, and keep one regular thing that is about you, not the care.
