When a relationship ends
The first weeks after a separation: looking after the basics, letting people in, and keeping big decisions for later.
The end of a relationship can turn life upside down, whoever made the decision. There may be grief, anger, relief, fear and a great deal to sort out, sometimes all in one afternoon. The first weeks are about getting through each day, not about having the answers.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Look after the basics: eat something, drink water, get outside every day, and try to keep a regular time to go to bed.
Tell one or two people you trust what has happened, and say yes to practical help.
Make a short list of what truly needs deciding soon, such as where you will sleep, money for the next month, the children's routine, and let the rest wait.
Before agreeing anything about money, the home or children, get advice from a recognised advice service or a qualified lawyer.
The reason
Why it helps
Big feelings make big decisions harder. Separating what is urgent from what can wait reduces the pressure. Looking after sleep, food and daylight keeps you steadier through the hard days, and talking to people who care about you can make the loss easier to carry.
A gentle variation
If you have children, try to keep their routines as normal as possible and tell them, together if you can, in simple words that it is not their fault. If you have been caring for your partner, the end of that role can bring its own mixed feelings.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
Ask a friend to check in with you at the same time each day for the first week, even with a short message. It is a small thread to hold on to.
Try it today
Today, eat one proper meal, step outside for ten minutes, and tell one person how you really are.
