A conversation

One real exchange a day, where you say how it is and someone hears it, does more for you than a hundred messages.

Not a catch-up. Not logistics. One conversation in which you say something true about how you are, and the other person hears it, and you hear them back.

The steps

Three small steps,in your own time.

  1. Think of one person who would want to know how you actually are.

  2. Call them, or walk with them, and say one true sentence about today.

  3. Then ask them one question and let them answer fully.

Why it is a practice

Most of our talking is traffic management: who is collecting whom, what is for dinner, did you call the pharmacy. It is necessary, and it is not connection. Connection is the moment someone asks how you are and you answer the real question instead of the polite one.

Those moments do not happen by accident when life is heavy. They have to be made room for, the way a walk has to be made room for. That is why a conversation is one of the five practices of this house.

The shape of it

It needs two things: a true sentence and a listener. The true sentence can be small. "I am more tired than I am letting on." "I keep thinking about Thursday." "I laughed today and then felt guilty about it." You do not have to explain it or solve it. You have to say it out loud to a person.

The listener's job is to hear it and not fix it. If you are the listener, the most useful thing you can say is "tell me more," or nothing at all, with your face turned towards them. Advice can come later, if it is asked for. It almost never is.

Where it happens

Side by side is easier than face to face for most people. A walk, a car, washing up together. Eye contact is optional and sometimes a barrier. Children, especially, talk in cars.

The phone works. A voice note works, if the reply is also a voice. Text does not, quite. It is too easy to be fine in writing.

When you have no one

Sometimes the person you would have talked to is the person who is ill. Sometimes everyone around you is as tired as you are. Then the conversation might be with someone paid to listen, which is not a failure. Or it might be the small version: telling one friend one true thing in a voice note, and asking them to send one back.

Here, the Ask Vive guide can take a true sentence any time, and it will not fix you either. It is software and says so. It is not a person, and it is a place to put the sentence down until you find one.

One a day

Aim for one. Not deep, not long. A true sentence, heard. If a day passes without one, notice that, and make the first call tomorrow.

WE · TRIBE

Try itwith someone.

Tell one person you are trying this today, and ask if they would like to do it with you. Small things done side by side are easier to keep.

Try it today

Today, try: say one true sentence about how you are to one person, out loud, and let them hear it.

Add it to your day
