Find a free concert close to home

Choirs, bandstands, lunchtime recitals, school concerts and open rehearsals: live music is often free and nearby, if you know where to look.

Live music does not have to mean tickets and a late night. Most towns have music that costs nothing: a choir in a church hall, a brass band in the park, a lunchtime recital at a college or concert hall, a school concert, a band practising with the doors open. An hour of it can change the shape of a week.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Look for free music near you: library and community centre noticeboards, local news pages, church and college listings, parks departments, and the words free, lunchtime or open rehearsal.

  2. Choose one that suits your energy and your day: a lunchtime recital is short and in daylight; a bandstand lets you come and go; a choir concert is usually under two hours.

  3. Plan the small things: how you will get there, where you will sit, and whether you need to arrive early for a seat. Write the date on the calendar.

  4. Go, and let yourself just listen. Afterwards, note what you liked and look up when they next play.

The reason

Why it helps

Hearing music played in a room, with other people, does something that a recording through a speaker does not: the sound is in your body, and you are part of an audience. Free events tend to be relaxed and local, which makes them easier to try and easier to return to. Regular ones can become a fixed point in the month.

A gentle variation

If going out is hard, look for a local choir or orchestra that streams or records its concerts, or ask whether a nearby care home or hospital hosts visiting musicians you could join. Some choirs welcome listeners at rehearsals, which are shorter and quieter than concerts.

Try itwith someone.

Take someone who would not go alone: an older parent, a neighbour, a teenager who has never heard a live orchestra. If you care for someone, a daytime concert with easy seating can be an outing you both enjoy, and music from their good years is often on the programme.

Try it today

Today, look up one free concert, recital or rehearsal near you in the next month and write the date on the calendar.

The kettle takes about three minutes. Sing something, out loud, badly, on purpose, until it clicks.
