A litter pick on your street
Spend half an hour picking up litter on your street or in a local park, on your own or with neighbours.
A street or park free of litter feels better to be in. Picking up litter for half an hour is a simple, visible way to care for where you live, and it often draws others in.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Gather what you need: thick gloves, one bag for waste and one for recycling, and a litter picker if you have one.
Choose a small area: your street, the path to the shops, a corner of a park.
Spend half an hour picking up what you can, and sort it into the right bags.
Put the bags out for collection in the usual way, or ask your local council or authority how to dispose of them.
The reason
Why it helps
Seeing an improvement you made can feel satisfying. A cleaner street can make people feel more comfortable outside. Doing it where others can see often encourages them to look after the area too.
A gentle variation
If you cannot walk far, choose the area right outside your home. Make it a regular thing, such as the first Saturday of the month, and invite neighbours.
