A little money of their own
A small, regular amount of money, or a pretend budget, that a child decides how to use, to learn about choices.
Children learn about money by handling it, making choices and sometimes making mistakes. A small, regular amount that is theirs to manage, whether real or pretend, can teach saving, spending and waiting in a low-stakes way.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Decide together what works for your family: real money, points, or a pretend budget. The amount matters less than the regularity.
Give it on the same day each week or month, and be clear about what it is for.
Let them choose how to spend or save it, even when you think the choice is unwise. Talk about it afterwards without scolding them.
Help them set one small goal to save for, and track it on paper or a chart.
The reason
Why it helps
Making real choices, with small amounts, can help children learn how money works before the stakes are high. Saving for something teaches waiting. Talking about choices afterwards helps them reflect without feeling judged.
A gentle variation
If money is tight, a pretend budget for planning a meal or an outing teaches the same skills. For teenagers, give them a little more responsibility, such as budgeting for their own clothes or phone credit.
