A pet plan for when you cannot be there

One page with everything someone else would need to look after your animal, in case you are suddenly away.

If you have to go into hospital, travel at short notice or stay with someone you care for, a pet can be a real worry. A simple written plan, made in calm times, means your animal is looked after and you have one less thing on your mind.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Write down your animal's daily routine: food, amounts, times, walks or litter, favourite toys, and any medicines.

  2. Add your vet's name and number, any insurance details and anything that worries or upsets your animal.

  3. Ask one or two people if they would be willing to step in, and give them a copy of the plan and a spare key if you trust them.

  4. Keep a copy by the door or on the fridge, and a photo on your phone. Update it when anything changes.

The reason

Why it helps

When something unexpected happens, people often worry about their animals as much as about themselves. A written plan makes it easier for someone else to step in, keeps the animal's routine steady, and lets you focus on what you need to deal with.

A gentle variation

If you live alone, consider carrying a small card in your wallet that says you have a pet at home and who to contact. If you have several animals, a page each keeps things clear.

When a pet is getting old

Small changes at home can make an older animal's last years more comfortable, and give you time to say what you want to say.
