When a pet is getting old

Small changes at home can make an older animal's last years more comfortable, and give you time to say what you want to say.

Animals age faster than we do, and many of us share our homes with a pet that is slowing down. Noticing what they need now, and making a few changes, can make their days easier, and give you both good time together.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Watch your animal for a day with fresh eyes: how they get up, climb stairs, eat, drink, and where they choose to sleep.

  2. Make one or two changes to help: a softer, warmer bed out of draughts, a rug on a slippery floor, food and water where they can reach easily.

  3. Shorten walks or play sessions but keep them regular, so your animal still has the pleasure of routine.

  4. Book a check-up with your vet, and ask how to keep your animal comfortable and what signs to watch for.

The reason

Why it helps

Older animals often hide discomfort, so small changes in behaviour can be the first sign that something is harder for them. Simple adjustments at home can make a real difference to comfort. Talking with a vet early helps you feel prepared rather than caught off guard.

A gentle variation

If you are worried about the end of your animal's life, it can help to write down what a good day looks like for them now. When good days become rare, that list can help you and your vet decide what is kindest.

WE · TRIBE

Try itwith someone.

Let the whole household, including children, spend time with an older animal and say what they love about them. If a child is close to the animal, prepare them gently for the changes ahead.

Try it today

Today, watch your older animal for a few minutes and make one change at home that makes their day easier.
