Ten quiet minutes with an animal
Sitting with an animal, stroking, watching, breathing, is one of the oldest ways to settle a busy mind.
Many people find that time with an animal is calming in a way that is hard to explain. A cat on a lap, a dog leaning against the leg, fish moving in a tank. This practice is about doing it on purpose, for ten minutes, rather than in passing.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Choose a time when your animal is relaxed and you are not in a hurry.
Sit somewhere comfortable and invite them to join you. Let them choose whether to come.
If they settle, stroke them slowly and notice the warmth, the texture, their breathing. If they prefer not to be touched, simply sit nearby and watch them.
Let your own breathing slow to match the calm. Stay for ten minutes, or for as long as they want to stay.
The reason
Why it helps
Slow, gentle contact with an animal, or simply watching one at rest, often leaves people feeling calmer and less alone. It asks nothing of you except to be there. And for the animal, quiet time with their person is part of feeling safe.
A gentle variation
If you do not have an animal of your own, spend time with a friend's pet, watch birds at a feeder, or visit a place where animals are kept and treated well. Even watching the birds from a window counts.
