A room that works for care

When someone spends most of the day in one room, a few changes can make it easier for them and for whoever helps.

When illness, an operation or age means someone spends most of their day in one room, that room has to do a lot. It is a bedroom, a living room and sometimes a place for care. Setting it up on purpose, rather than as things land, can make the days easier for the person in it and for anyone who helps.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Sit where the person sits or lies, and look around from there. Notice what they can see, what they can reach and what they have to ask for.

  2. Bring the everyday things within arm's reach: water, glasses, a phone and charger, tissues, the remote control, a lamp they can switch on themselves.

  3. Make space around the bed or chair so someone can move and help without squeezing past furniture, and keep the floor clear.

  4. Add one thing that is just for pleasure: a photo, a plant, a view of the window, a radio, a chair for visitors.

The reason

Why it helps

Being able to reach things for yourself keeps a little independence, and fewer small requests can mean less frustration on both sides. Space around the bed or chair can make helping safer. And a room that holds something enjoyable feels less like a sick room and more like part of home.

A gentle variation

If the person can tell you, ask them to list what they reach for most in a day, and start there. If they cannot, watch for a day what they look towards or ask for. A nurse or occupational therapist can advise on equipment if it is needed.

WE · TRIBE

Try itwith someone.

Set the room up with the person, not around them. Ask where they would like the chair, which way they would like to face, what they would like to see. Small choices like these matter when much else is out of their hands.

Try it today

Today, sit where the person sits and move three things they use every day to within arm's reach.
