Clearone surface

One table, one shelf or one corner of the counter, kept clear, with one thing on it you like.

A whole home can feel like too much. One clear surface is something you can do today and keep this week.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Choose one surface you see often: the kitchen table, the bedside, a shelf by the door.

  2. Take everything off it. Wipe it down.

  3. Put back only what belongs there, and find homes for the rest, or put it in one box to sort another day.

  4. Choose one thing you like to put on it: a cup, a candle, a plant, a stone, a photo. Keep it like that for a week.

The reason

Why it helps

A clear surface gives the eye somewhere to rest. It is a small piece of order that you can see from across the room, and it tends to spread: once one surface is clear, it is easier to keep the next one. It is also the simplest way to make a corner of the home feel like yours.

A gentle variation

If you are short of time, clear half the surface and leave the other half for tomorrow.
