A safer home, room by room

Half an hour walking through a parent's home with them, looking for small changes that make falls less likely.

Most homes are set up for the person someone used to be. A gentle walk-through, done together and with their say on every change, can make daily life easier and safer without making the place feel like a hospital.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Ask if you can walk round the home together, and let them lead. Start in the room they use most.

  2. Look low: loose rugs, trailing cables, clutter on the stairs, a step that is hard to see. Look high: things used every day that need a stretch or a stool.

  3. Look at light: the route from bed to bathroom at night, the top and bottom of the stairs, the front door.

  4. Agree three small changes together, such as moving a rug, adding a night light, bringing the everyday cups down a shelf, and do one of them today.

The reason

Why it helps

Falls often happen during ordinary things: a trip in the dark, a stretch for a high shelf, a slippery step. Small changes to the home remove many of those moments. Doing it with your parent, rather than for them, protects their sense that this is still their home and their decision.

A gentle variation

If they resist the idea, start with one change that makes life easier rather than safer, like a lamp by the favourite chair. People accept help more readily when it feels like comfort rather than caution.

WE · TRIBE

Try itwith someone.

Make it a visit with a meal or a walk afterwards, so the day is not only about risk. If brothers, sisters or neighbours help, give each person one change to make, so it gets done.

Try it today

On your next visit, walk the route from your parent's bed to the bathroom with them and agree one change to make it safer.

Asking for help

People want to help and do not know how; a specific ask is the kindest thing you can give them.

Sleep when you are on call

When you are listening for someone all night, the aim is rest you can trust, not sleep you cannot.
