An evening that is not about care
When one of you looks after the other, or someone else, plan one evening where you are simply two people again.
When caring takes over a relationship, a partner can start to feel like a patient or a colleague. One evening, planned and protected, can remind you both that you are still two people who chose each other.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Agree a date in the next two weeks and write it down. Arrange cover if someone needs looking after, or choose a time they will be settled.
Agree one rule: no talk about medicines, appointments, money or the to-do list for the evening.
Choose something you used to enjoy together, sized to now: a favourite meal at home by candlelight, an old film, the music you danced to, a short drive to a view.
Afterwards, tell each other one thing you enjoyed, and pick the next date before the week runs away with you.
The reason
Why it helps
Relationships are fed by shared pleasure as well as shared problems. Setting aside one evening without care-talk gives both people a break from the roles they have been playing. It is often in these ordinary, light moments that closeness comes back.
A gentle variation
If one of you is unwell or tired, keep it very small: twenty minutes holding hands while listening to music, or looking through old photographs together. The point is that it is just for the two of you.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
Ask a friend, neighbour or family member to cover for an evening as their way of helping. People often want to help and do not know how; this is a clear, kind thing to ask for.
Try it today
Today, agree one evening in the next two weeks that is just for the two of you, with no care-talk allowed.
