Decide what tidy enough means

A short, written standard for the home that the household can actually keep, so the rest can be let go without guilt.

Many of us carry a picture of how the home should look that has little to do with the life we are living. When work, children, caring or illness take up the days, that picture becomes one more thing to fall short of. Agreeing a standard of tidy enough, out loud or on paper, can take some of the weight off.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Write down the three or four things that genuinely make the home work for you, for example clean dishes for the next meal, a clear path through the hall, somewhere to sit down.

  2. Next to each, write how often it really needs doing. Be honest rather than ideal.

  3. Look at everything else you feel you should be doing, and choose what can wait, be done less often, or be left alone for now.

  4. Keep the list somewhere you will see it, and on a hard day, do only what is on it.

The reason

Why it helps

A clear, small standard turns a vague feeling of mess into a few jobs that can be finished. It can be easier to rest in a room when you know it meets the standard you chose, even if it does not meet the one in your head. The list can change as life changes.

A gentle variation

If even the short list feels like too much this week, choose one thing from it and let that be enough. On better days, you can add one small job, and stop there.

Try itwith someone.

If you share a home, write the list together, so the standard is shared and not one person's private worry. Each person can choose the job they mind least. If you care for someone, ask what matters most to them about the home; it may be different from what you expect.

Try it today

Today, write down three things that make your home work, and one thing you will stop worrying about this week.
