One small piece of tech for living at home
A lamp on a timer, a doorbell with a screen, a big-button phone: one simple device, chosen with the person, can support independence.
Simple technology can make living at home easier and safer: a lamp that turns on by itself at dusk, a doorbell with a screen, a phone with big buttons and photos for contacts, a pendant alarm. The best device is one the person actually wants and will use, and that starts with asking them.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Ask the person what is hardest or most worrying day to day: getting to the door, the dark, forgetting the stove, falling with nobody there, keeping in touch.
Look for one simple device that answers that one thing, and check it works without a complicated set-up or a monthly fee nobody expected.
Set it up together and try it for a week, with written steps on a card next to it.
At the end of the week, ask how it went, and keep it, change it or take it away.
The reason
Why it helps
Starting with the person's own worry makes it more likely the device gets used rather than left in a drawer. One device at a time is easier to learn than several. A trial week gives everyone a chance to change their mind.
A gentle variation
An occupational therapist or local services may be able to assess what would help, and some areas lend or provide equipment such as alarms. Ask before buying.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
This practice is built around the person, so keep them in charge of the decision, including the right to say no. If they are worried about being watched, choose devices that support them rather than monitor them, and talk openly about what each one does.
Try it today
Today, ask someone you look after what one thing at home they find hardest, and write down their answer.
