Sharing the nights

A simple plan for who is on duty when, so at least one adult gets a stretch of proper rest.

Broken nights are part of the first months with a baby, and they are hard. When nobody knows whose turn it is, both adults often end up awake. A plan, even a rough one, can give each person a block of rest.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Sit down together in the daytime, not at two in the morning, and talk about the nights. Who is most tired? Who has to be up early?

  2. Agree on blocks of time: for example, one person is on duty until a certain hour, the other after that. The one off duty sleeps somewhere quieter if possible, with earplugs.

  3. Plan the jobs the off-duty person can still do in the day: meals, washing, the morning shift, so the load feels fair.

  4. Try it for a week, then talk again. Change what does not work. Ask your health visitor, nurse or midwife how night feeds can fit around your baby's needs.

The reason

Why it helps

Even one longer stretch of sleep can help adults cope better with the day. A clear plan also cuts down on arguments in the middle of the night, when everyone is at their most tired. And it shares the work, so one person does not quietly carry it all.

A gentle variation

If you are on your own, think about who could take one night, or one afternoon, so you can sleep: a friend, a relative, a neighbour you trust. Even a nap in the day while someone else holds the baby can help.

WE · TRIBE

Try itwith someone.

If a grandparent or friend is staying, ask them to take the early morning, so you can sleep on after the last night feed. Tell them exactly what the baby needs and where everything is.

Try it today

This week, sit down in the daytime with whoever shares the nights and agree who is on duty when.
