The five-minute reset between roles
A short ritual for the moment you switch from caring to working, or back again, so you do not carry one into the other.
People who work and care often switch roles many times a day: from a difficult phone call about a parent straight into a meeting, or from a long shift straight into caring. A small, deliberate pause between the two can stop the strain of one spilling into the other.
The steps
Four small steps,in your own time.
Notice the moment of switching: closing the laptop, hanging up the call, walking through the door.
Stop for five minutes. Stand up, stretch your arms above your head and take five slow breaths, each out-breath longer than the in-breath.
Write down, in a line or two, anything you need to remember from the role you are leaving, so you can stop carrying it.
Say quietly to yourself what comes next: now I am going into the meeting, or now I am home. Then go.
The reason
Why it helps
Without a pause, the stress of one part of the day comes with us into the next. A short ritual helps the body settle and gives the mind a clear signal that one thing has ended and another begun. Writing things down stops them circling while you are trying to focus.
A gentle variation
If five minutes is impossible, take one minute: three slow breaths and one sentence on paper. If you drive or travel between roles, use the last few minutes of the journey in silence, without the radio.

WE · TRIBE
Try itwith someone.
Share the ritual with someone at home. Agree that when you come in, you get five minutes before anyone needs anything from you, and you will give them the same.
Try it today
Today, at one switch between working and caring, stop for five minutes, breathe slowly and write down what you need to remember.
