When the crying will not stop

All babies cry, sometimes for a long time. A plan for the hard moments: put the baby down safely, step away, and breathe.

All babies cry, and some cry a great deal, often in the late afternoon or evening. It can be exhausting and upsetting, and it can make even the calmest adult feel angry or desperate. Those feelings are normal. What matters is having a plan for the moment they come.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Check the simple things: is your baby hungry, too hot or too cold, in need of a change, or wanting to be held?

  2. Try one calm thing at a time: holding them close, gentle rocking, a quiet room, a walk with the pram.

  3. If you feel yourself becoming angry or overwhelmed, put the baby down on their back in their cot or another safe place, and leave the room for a few minutes. Take some slow breaths, drink some water, and call someone if you can.

  4. When you feel calmer, go back. It is fine to repeat this as many times as you need. Never shake a baby.

The reason

Why it helps

Crying is how babies communicate, and it is not a sign that you are doing something wrong. A plan made in a calm moment is easier to follow in a hard one. Putting the baby down somewhere safe and stepping away protects both of you while the feeling passes.

A gentle variation

If the crying seems different from usual, or goes on for long periods every day, ask your health visitor, nurse or doctor. They can check that your baby is well and suggest what might help.
