Keep the railone in, one out

When something new comes into the wardrobe, one thing goes out. The rail stays the same size, and everything on it gets worn.

Wardrobes fill slowly and almost never empty. One rule keeps yours at a size you can see and use: when something new comes in, one thing goes out.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Count the hangers on your rail, or the things in your main drawer. That number is the size of your wardrobe now.

  2. Keep an empty bag or box at the bottom of the wardrobe for things that are leaving.

  3. Each time you bring something new home, choose one thing to go into the bag the same day: something that no longer fits, that you have not worn in a year, or that you keep putting back.

  4. When the bag is full, pass it on: to a friend, a neighbour, a local shop that takes clothes, or the textile bank.

The reason

Why it helps

A rail where you can see everything is a rail you actually wear. Fewer things means less to wash, store and choose between, and the pieces you keep are the ones you like. The rule also slows down buying without forbidding it. Before anything new comes home, you already know what it would replace.

A gentle variation

If letting go is hard, use a maybe bag: put the thing in, write the date on the bag, and only pass it on if you have not missed it in three months. Clothes that belonged to someone you have lost do not have to follow this rule at all.

WE · TRIBE

Try itwith someone.

Swap rather than shop. Bring your bag to a friend's, they bring theirs, and each of you takes one thing home. One in, one out, and the clothes get a second life with someone you know.

Try it today

Today, put an empty bag at the bottom of your wardrobe. The next time something new comes home, one thing goes into the bag.
