Wear one thing thatfeels like you

On a hard week, put on one thing that makes you feel more like yourself: a colour, a jacket, a ring, a scent.

When life is about someone else, it is easy to disappear into whatever is clean. This practice is a small way of staying visible to yourself.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Think of one thing you own that makes you feel most like yourself: a coat, a colour, a pair of earrings, a watch, a perfume.

  2. Put it where you will see it in the morning.

  3. Wear it today, even if no one else will notice.

  4. At some point in the day, notice it: in a mirror, on your wrist, in the smell of your scarf.

The reason

Why it helps

Small choices about how you look are one of the few things on a hard day that are entirely yours. Wearing something you like is a quiet reminder that you are a person with tastes, not only a role. It takes two minutes and asks nothing of anyone else.

A gentle variation

If nothing feels right, start with something comfortable and soft. Feeling at ease in your clothes counts too.

Keep the rail one in, one out

When something new comes into the wardrobe, one thing goes out. The rail stays the same size, and everything on it gets worn.
