Mendone thing

A loose button, a dropped hem, a small tear: twenty minutes with a needle brings something you like back into use.

Somewhere in most homes is a small pile of clothes waiting for a button or a stitch. It stays there for months, because mending sounds like a bigger job than it is. This practice is one thing, one evening, one needle.

The steps

Four small steps,in your own time.

  1. Pick one thing from the pile: the one you miss wearing most. One loose button or one small tear is plenty.

  2. Find a needle, thread in a colour close to the fabric, and a pair of scissors. Sit somewhere with good light.

  3. Do the simplest fix: sew the button back on with a few stitches through each hole, or close the small tear with small, even stitches from the inside. If you are not sure how, a two-minute video will show you.

  4. Tie off the thread, put the thing straight back in the wardrobe, and wear it this week.

The reason

Why it helps

Mending is slow, quiet work for the hands, and it asks for just enough attention to rest a busy mind. At the end there is something finished, which is rare on a day full of jobs that never end. And the thing you mended often becomes a favourite, because you know what went into it.

A gentle variation

If a needle is too fiddly today, choose a fix with no sewing: a safety pin inside a hem, or taking it to a local tailor and collecting it next week. Getting it off the pile is the point.

WE · TRIBE

Try itwith someone.

Ask someone who mends to show you once, and bring them something of theirs to work on alongside. Or sit together of an evening, one of you mending, the other reading aloud.

Try it today

This week, take one thing from the mending pile, sew on the button or close the small tear, and wear it.
